Broken Trust, Unmet Promises Led To My APC Resignation — Iyabo Obasanjo

Former senator representing Ogun Central,  Iyabo Obasanjo, has explained that her decision to resign from the All Progressives Congress (APC) was prompted by disappointment over unfulfilled promises made by the party’s consensus governorship candidate in Ogun State.

Iyabo made the disclosure while speaking on The Morayo Show on Thursday, saying she could no longer remain in a political platform where commitments made to her and her supporters were not honoured.

“I resigned from the APC because I was upset that the consensus candidate failed to keep the promises he made to me and my followers,” she said.

The former lawmaker and daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo returned to active politics in January 2026 after nearly 15 years away and declared her ambition to contest the Ogun State governorship election on the platform of the APC.

However, her political journey within the ruling party was short-lived. She resigned from the APC on May 31, 2026, after losing the governorship ticket, alleging disrespect, exclusion and unfair treatment by the party leadership.

Iyabo particularly faulted the consensus arrangement that produced Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the APC governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Ogun State.

In her resignation letter, she maintained that although she had agreed to abide by any consensus decision reached by the party, she was neither consulted nor actively involved in the process that led to Adeola’s emergence.

She also alleged that some of her supporters were prevented from accessing the venue where the consensus candidate was unveiled.

According to her, Senator Adeola later met with her supporters and promised to address several concerns raised by her camp within one week but failed to fulfil the assurances.

The former senator recently joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a move that has introduced fresh dynamics into the political calculations ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
