Ship chandling, the business of supplying vessels with essential goods and services, remains a vital and profitable segment of the maritime industry.

With Nigeria’s busy seaports, handling thousands of vessels annually, industry stakeholders say success in ship chandling depends on strategy, compliance and strong relationships.

Experts note that a ship chandler provides a wide range of items, including food provisions, safety equipment, spare parts, bonded stores and technical supplies needed by vessels during port calls.

As global trade continues to expand, demand for reliable chandlers is rising and to succeed in the business, operators must first ensure proper registration and licensing with relevant authorities such as the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS).

However, compliance with port regulations and international maritime standards is considered critical to building credibility and avoiding sanctions.

Industry players also emphasise the importance of quality and timely delivery. They argued that diversification can further boost success, beyond basic supplies, chandlers can expand into specialised services such as waste management, technical maintenance support and offshore supply services to increase revenue streams.

According to experts, the ship chandling business continues to offer strong growth potential for disciplined and well-structured operators.

Speaking, Ifeanyi Obi, a ship chandler said, Ships often operate on tight schedules, leaving little room for delays.

“A successful ship chandler must therefore develop efficient logistics systems, maintain adequate inventory and ensure prompt delivery directly to vessels, sometimes within hours of request.

“Financial discipline is another key factor. Stakeholders advise operators to maintain strong working capital, as transactions often involve bulk purchases and delayed payments from shipping companies. Proper pricing strategies and cost control can help sustain profitability,” he said.

According to Chukwuma Anaeto, relationship management is equally vital. Building trust with ship captains, procurement officers and shipping companies can lead to repeat business and long-term contracts.

“Networking within port communities and participating in maritime events can also open new opportunities. Technology adoption is increasingly shaping the sector as digital inventory systems, online order processing and real-time communication tools are helping chandlers improve efficiency and meet client expectations in a fast-paced industry,” he said.

He continued, “Security and compliance with health and safety standards are also essential. Ensuring that supplies meet international safety requirements and are free from contamination is crucial, particularly for food items delivered onboard,” he stated.
