Catholic Laity Council Demands Action On Nigeria’s Security Situation

The Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria (CLCN) has condemned the current security situation across the country and called on the federal government to take decisive measures to address the concerns.

National president of CLCN, Sir Ambrose Obioha and the secretary general, Mr. Francis Ojo Olayinka, made the call in a statement jointly signed and made available to newsmen in Owerri, Imo State yesterday.

The council which is the umbrella body of over 32 million Catholics added to the growing voices of religious and civil society voices advocating decisive action on the current insecurity across Nigeria.

The group declared solidarity with the Catholic Bishops of Makurdi, Gboko and Katsina-Ala in Benue State for their unwavering commitment to peace and justice, and for maintaining calm among their faithful despite being on the frontlines of violent attacks.

They described the security situation in the country as “deplorable,” with innocent citizens in the Northern and Middle Belt regions bearing the brunt of the crisis.

The statement acknowledged the presence of a fact-finding team from the United States, and appreciated their efforts to bring international attention to Nigeria’s escalating security challenges.

While the group lamented that  the current security situation had “desecrated our common humanity.”

It called on the government to urgently and decisively fulfill its duty of protecting lives and property of all citizens through immediate and concrete actions.

It also advised Nigerians to embrace national unity and reject all forms of violence and hatred.
