The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has raised concerns over shrinking civic space, weakened institutions and limited citizen participation in Nigeria.

The organisation identified the issues as areas of concern ahead of its 20th anniversary lecture scheduled for November 2 in Abuja.

In a press release signed by its executive director, Comrade Ibrahim Zikirullahi, CHRICED said the lecture would focus on the rule of law, democratic accountability and the future of citizen participation in Nigeria.

The lecture, titled “Reclaiming Civic Space: The Rule of Law, Democratic Accountability and the Future of Citizen Participation in Nigeria,” is part of the activities marking the organisation’s 20th anniversary.

According to the release, the anniversary activities also include the unveiling of its Legacy House in Kano.

The two-storey facility, built with support from the MacArthur Foundation, comprises a 100-capacity civic hall, conference and training rooms, workstations, guest facilities, offices and other ancillary spaces.
CHRICED said the facility would serve as a regional hub for civic education, youth empowerment, community organising, policy dialogue and democratic engagement across Northern Nigeria.

The organisation also plans to unveil two publications: Action Civic Manual for Nigerian Students, a guide to civic engagement and democratic participation, and Voices of Vigilance: CHRICED’s Public Interventions in a Defining Era, a collection of its press statements from January 2020 to September 2026.

Founded in 2006, CHRICED said it would visit its partners between October 15 and November 2 as part of activities marking its 20th anniversary.
