The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the Christmas Eve explosion at a mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, Borno State, describing it as “another sad reminder of the rising insecurity” in the country and accusing the Federal Government of failing in its primary responsibility to protect lives and property.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the opposition party said the incident underscored what it called the “unfortunate contemporary reality Nigerians face daily.”
“This is totally unacceptable. The irreducible minimum the government should offer its people is the protection of lives and property,” the PDP said. “This administration has failed woefully in this respect and should rise to the occasion rather than resort to rhetoric and playing politics with security.”
The party commiserated with families of victims of the attack, stressing that no Nigerian should lose their life while worshipping.
“No one should lose their life while worshipping God,” Ememobong said, warning that continued attacks on places of worship would not only violate citizens’ constitutional right to freedom of religion but also “create an atmosphere of fear that threatens the very fabric of our religious society.”
The PDP called on both the Federal and State Governments to take urgent and practical measures to safeguard Nigerians during the yuletide and beyond.
“Nigerians deserve more than empty promises and political rhetoric,” the statement added. “We need concrete, actionable security strategies deployed on the ground. This escalating insecurity has become unbearable and must be confronted with the urgency and seriousness it deserves.”
