Christmas: Police Threaten Sanctions Against Sellers, Users Of Fireworks In Oyo

Ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations, the Oyo State Police Command has banned the unauthorised storage, sale, and use of fireworks, warning that violators will face strict penalties.

Police also restated the ban on the unauthorised use of sirens, revolving lights, and covered number plates, stressing that offenders will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

The Command, in a comprehensive Year-End Security Advisory aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of residents throughout the holiday season, reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property during the celebrations.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Oyo State Command, CSP Adewale Osifeso, in a statement, outlined several proactive security measures already in place to address the heightened movement and public gatherings typical of the season.

According to Osifeso, the Police Command has strengthened security coverage across the state by deploying additional officers to strategic locations, including markets, public spaces, and places of worship.

He said the move was intended to provide a safe environment for residents and visitors to the state as they engage in end-of-year activities.

The Command also emphasised that all religious and festive gatherings must be held in open and publicly accessible locations.

It further advised organisers to avoid secluded venues and notify relevant security authorities ahead of events to ensure proper monitoring and protection.

“Central to the advisory is a call for public cooperation. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activities or security concerns to the nearest police station or through designated emergency contact lines”, it added.

The Command called for unity and collective responsibility, noting that community collaboration remains key to achieving a peaceful and secure festive season for everyone in the state.
