Human rights groups under the aegis of The Network of Osun Civil Society Groups have lauded the inspector-general of police (IGP), Tunji Disu, for his intervention in the wave of political violence and insecurity in Osun State ahead of the 15th August governorship election.
The IGP sent the deputy inspector-general of police (South-West), DIG Adegoke Fayoade, to Osun following the recent violence that engulfed the state.
The group, in a statement signed yesterday by Comrade Olowu Emmanuel Ayedun, he commended the IGP for intervening by directing that political violence must end immediately and also welcomed his directive that all those responsible for murder, abduction, violence, and other criminal acts be thoroughly investigated, arrested, and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Recall also that the Network had earlier issued a 72-hour ultimatum, among other things, the immediate redeployment of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, as a confidence-building measure in the interest of public safety.
The group said ordinarily, the expiration of that ultimatum on Saturday, 27 June 2026, would have marked the commencement of the next phase of their democratic actions. Still, in recognition of the Inspector-General’s intervention and in the interest of peace, constructive engagement, and respect for constituted authority, they have resolved to extend their next line of action by another 72 hours.
They noted that the extension was to allow the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to implement the Inspector-General’s directives and to give both the Inspector-General and the Police Service Commission adequate time to act on their demand.
They renewed their call for the immediate redeployment of CP Ibrahim Gotan from Osun State and comprehensive restructuring of the leadership and policing architecture of the Osun State Police Command.
