The unveiling of Aso Mirror, an indigenous newspaper representing the voice of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) indigenes, has received widespread commendations.

The weekly publication, which has been in circulation for months, was officially presented to the public by Hon. Adamu Candido, the immediate past chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and chairman of Aso Mirror Newspapers Limited, the publishers of Aso Mirror.

At yesterday’s unveiling ceremony in Abuja, the chairman of Abaji area council Umar Abdullahi  urged the newspaper’s management to uphold investigative journalism and professional ethics.

He said, “Aso Mirror has a clear, informative, and meaningful purpose as the voice of the indigenous people of the FCT. The media creates awareness and educates people about government policies, particularly at the local level. It will serve as a platform for checks and balances, allowing the people to air their views.

“However, I urge the management of Aso Mirror to engage in investigative journalism. Abiding by the ethics of the profession will ensure the newspaper remains relevant and does not fade into extinction,” he added.

The chairman of Aso Mirror Newspapers Limited Adamu Candido,  highlighted the publication’s role as a voice for the people of the FCT. He expressed the ambition to transition the newspaper from a weekly to a daily publication.

“Aso Mirror is community-based, and as a community person, I wanted to unveil it within the community it serves. The newspaper will speak for FCT residents, giving a voice to the voiceless indigenous people of the territory,” he said.

Candido emphasized that the newspaper would maintain its integrity, avoiding unwarranted attacks on government policies while holding leaders accountable.

“We will not unnecessarily criticize government policies but instead draw attention to areas needing improvement. Our focus will be on reporting the people’s issues, assessing government actions, and making recommendations for national development,” he said.

Candido outlined plans to gradually expand the publication. “Every major newspaper started from somewhere. Aso Mirror is currently a weekly publication available at newsstands.

“Over time, we aim to move to twice-weekly and eventually daily publications. However, we prioritize providing quality content to our readers rather than rushing the process.”
