Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has praised new head coach José Mourinho’s demanding approach, insisting the Portuguese’s emphasis on discipline and teamwork can lead the club to success.
Courtois has welcomed the opportunity to work with Mourinho again, having previously played under the manager at Chelsea.
The Belgian goalkeeper recently returned to individual training ahead of schedule as he continues his recovery from the injury he suffered during the World Cup quarter-final against Spain.
Speaking to Real Madrid TV, Courtois said he opted to resume training early to ensure he would be fully fit before returning to the first-team group.
“I returned a bit early because, due to the injury, I wanted to ensure I was entirely fit through individual training before reuniting with the team,” Courtois said.
“Today I focused on goalkeeping drills and felt excellent. I’m overjoyed to be back.”
Courtois also spoke highly of Mourinho, describing him as a strict manager who places the interests of the team above individual players.
“He is an exceptionally strict coach,” Courtois said. “He is a fantastic coach, and his demeanour is very approachable. He speaks the truth as it is, which I appreciate.
“I believe this is the direction we need to pursue.”
The pair worked together at Chelsea, where they enjoyed success in the Premier League, and Courtois is looking forward to renewing their professional relationship in Madrid.
“I have fond memories with him, and we hope to collaborate effectively and enjoy wonderful years here,” he added.
Courtois also cautioned against rushing players back into full fitness following their break, stressing the importance of avoiding early-season injuries.
“If we push ourselves too hard at the start, we risk early injuries,” he said.
“We will quickly regain our fitness because we did not have an extended break, and we will be in good shape.”
