Crystal Palace have failed in their attempt to have Jean-Philippe Mateta’s red card overturned, meaning the forward will serve a three-match Premier League suspension.
Mateta was sent off by referee Michael Oliver during Saturday’s league defeat at Tottenham. The dismissal came after 13 minutes, with the score at 0-0, for a late challenge on Spurs defender Micky van de Ven.
Oliver initially showed Mateta a yellow card, but the decision was changed to a red after a video assistant referee review.
Palace appealed against the decision, arguing that the contact was accidental. It is understood Mateta, 29, believed he was looking at the ball and did not see Van de Ven.
The France forward will now miss Sunday’s away game against Liverpool, the trip to Coventry on 21 November and the home fixture against Hull on 29 November.
The Liverpool match could be significant for manager Pierre Sage’s future at the club. Palace have made a poor start under Sage and sit 18th in the Premier League with seven points from nine matches. They have lost their last three league games, conceding nine goals and scoring none.
Mateta remains available for Palace’s Europa League home match against Hoffenheim on Thursday and the visit of Real Sociedad on 26 November.
