The Advocacy for Good Ethics and Accountability for Development (AGEAD), an umbrella body of over 52 civil society organisations (CSOs) in Nigeria, has honoured the chief medical director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jalingo, Dr Aisha Shehu Adamu, for her outstanding leadership and transformational contributions to healthcare delivery in Taraba State.

The recognition followed a two-day assessment tour of the hospital conducted by AGEAD from 30th April and 1st May, 2026, during which the organisation evaluated infrastructure projects, healthcare facilities and operational improvements implemented under the leadership of Adamu.

In a statement issued to journalists in Abuja, the executive director of AGEAD, Comrade Henry Thomas, commended Dr Adamu for repositioning FMC Jalingo through strategic reforms, prudent resource management, and a sustained commitment to quality healthcare service delivery.

According to him, Adamu assumed office at a time when the hospital faced several operational challenges, including inadequate ward space, obsolete medical equipment, erratic electricity supply, and limited specialist healthcare services, which often led to patient referrals outside Taraba State.

He stated that under her administration, the hospital has recorded notable progress across critical sectors, including infrastructure expansion, improved diagnostic capacity, enhanced emergency response services, staff welfare, and digital healthcare management.

Comrade Thomas listed some of the major projects executed between 2020 and 2026, including the construction and equipping of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Complex, a Neonatal Complex, a Theatre Complex, a Kidney Centre, an Accident and Emergency Complex, and a modern hospital with a High Dependency Unit.

Other interventions, he said, include the renovation of hospital wards, procurement of essential medical equipment and utility vehicles, furnishing of wards, installation of solar-hybrid power backup systems, and deployment of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems.

According to AGEAD, these interventions have significantly expanded healthcare infrastructure, strengthened emergency and critical care services, improved diagnostic and treatment capacity, enhanced staff efficiency, and boosted public confidence in the facility.

The organisation, however, acknowledged ongoing challenges facing the hospital, including inadequate funding, inflationary pressures, workforce shortages for specialised equipment operation, maintenance of sophisticated facilities, increasing patient turnout, and poor electricity supply.

AGEAD called for increased Federal Government funding, timely release of capital allocations, stronger public-private partnerships, improved maintenance systems, continuous staff training, and enhanced collaboration with donor agencies to sustain the hospital’s progress.

Comrade Henry Thomas further stated that Dr Adamu’s leadership has significantly improved healthcare access for residents of Taraba State and neighbouring communities, and she has been described as visionary, transparent, and people-oriented.

He added that the achievements recorded under her leadership have repositioned FMC Jalingo as a growing centre of excellence in healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
