After long hours of abstaining from food and drinks, especially during fasting periods – Ramadan and lent – many people consider dates as an ideal option to break their fast.
This growing demand suggests that investing in the date fruit business could generate significant revenue for entrepreneurs.
Dates are among the oldest cultivated fruits in the world. Historical records trace their origin back to around 5320 BC. The fruit is widely consumed in the Middle East and North Africa, where it is primarily cultivated and forms a staple part of the diet.
Beyond its cultural and religious significance, dates are also highly valued for their nutritional benefits. The fruit is rich in macronutrients and several health-boosting compounds, making it a healthy addition to daily meals.
For instance, nutrition experts recommend including dates in one’s diet either as a breakfast item, particularly when breaking a fast, or as a healthy snack. Dates can easily be incorporated into a regular diet or added to the list of commonly consumed fruits.
For many people, the fruit represents one of nature’s most beneficial gifts due to its impressive health properties.
Botanically, dates are tropical fruits grown on date palm trees and are scientifically known as Phoenix dactylifera. They are widely regarded as one of the healthiest fruits available and are classified among dried fruits. For centuries, dates have played an important role in West Asian heritage and cuisine.
Due to their rich nutritional value, dates contain essential vitamins and nutrients that are beneficial to overall health. They are often consumed alongside other foods when breaking a fast because they help restore energy and replenish nutrients lost during long hours without food.
According to nutritionists, dates are particularly rich in fibre and carbohydrates, making them one of the healthiest dried fruits available.
Speaking to LEADERSHIP, nutrition expert and dietician, Dr. Ajayi Ojo, noted that dates possess high nutritional value and should be included on breakfast tables, especially after fasting.
He explained that both dried and fresh dates are excellent sources of vitamins, including B1, B2, B3, and B5, which are essential for maintaining optimal body health.
“With just about N50,000, one can start supplying and retailing dates to consumers and potentially generate up to N1 million weekly, particularly during fasting periods when demand increases. Dates help replenish lost vitality and serve as a natural fruit supplement,” he said.
Ajayi added that the fruit’s high nutrient content contributes to its numerous health benefits, which also make it an attractive investment opportunity for traders and marketers.
He further highlighted that dates contain one of the highest concentrations of antioxidants among dried fruits.
“Dates can improve brain function. They are rich in nutrients such as potassium, which supports neurological health. Apart from helping prevent degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, dates also enhance the overall functioning of the brain and nervous system,” he explained.
“In addition, dates may facilitate natural labour in pregnant women. Studies suggest that eating dates can increase the likelihood of natural labour and help reduce complications during delivery,” he added.
