Afrobeats superstar Davido, born David Adeleke, has addressed growing speculation about his ties to Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, clarifying that their relationship is purely personal and has no bearing on his willingness to speak out about the state of Nigeria.

The singer clarified after facing backlash online following recent comments he made about the country, with some critics suggesting his friendship with the president’s son compromised his stance.

“I’ve been friends with ST for years, and that’s where it stops. I call and complain to him all the time, even in person,” he said, also firmly denying any affiliation with a political group. “I no dey part of any City Boy group.”

Davido also pushed back at the inconsistency of public criticism, pointing out that he was met with condemnation when he previously spoke out against the government on international media.

Beyond defending himself, the artist used the moment to call on fellow entertainers and public figures to be more vocal about the injustice and insecurity plaguing the country — and was candid enough to include himself in that criticism.

“We need to speak up, it’s too much injustice going on. Our country don go,” he wrote, acknowledging that the entertainment community as a whole has fallen short in using its platform for social good.
