The controversy involving Deborah Mbara and Blessing Okoro (widely known as Blessing CEO) centres on allegations of medical identity theft and the fabrication of a life-threatening illness.
The dispute began when Blessing CEO announced to her followers that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. To support her claim, she shared emotional videos, shaved her head, and posted a medical test result.
However, online investigators and the family of Deborah Mbara, a makeup artist, quickly pointed out discrepancies.
It was alleged that the medical report Blessing CEO shared was actually a doctored version of Ms. Mbara’s legitimate cancer diagnosis.
Deborah’s family and representatives have taken a firm stance against Blessing CEO. Ms. Mbara is a genuine cancer survivor who has undergone grueling chemotherapy. Her family viewed the use of her actual medical records to stage a “fake” illness as a deep betrayal and an insult to those truly battling the disease.
Comparisons of the documents suggested that Blessing CEO edited Ms. Mbara’s original result changing the name, date, and hospital location (reportedly from Asaba to Enugu) while leaving other specific medical data identical.
Blessing CEO reportedly received donations and sympathy based on the “stolen” diagnosis, therefore the family viewed her actions as fraudulent rather than a simple mistake that could be settled with a public apology.
The family and Ms. Mbara’s legal team have indicated that they are seeking more than just words; they have pursued accountability through the police and legal channels, citing character defamation and the unauthorized use of private medical data.
While Blessing CEO eventually attempted to walk back her claims or offer explanations, the Mbara family has maintained that her actions caused significant emotional distress to Deborah. They have largely remained committed to seeking justice through formal authorities rather than accepting social media apologies.
