Delta Community Raises Alarm Over Threats From Herdsmen

The Owah-Abbi community in Ukwuani local government area of Delta State has raised an alarm over escalating threats to their security.

The community leaders, during a courtesy visit to the deputy governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, in Asaba, appealed for urgent government intervention to restore peace and stability.

The delegation, led by Chief Imala Odufu, expressed grave concerns over issues plaguing their once-peaceful community, including the destructive activities of herdsmen on farmlands across the River Ethiope and disputes related to oil discoveries in the region.

Odufu decried the increasing intimidation and harassment allegedly orchestrated by the Ukwata of Umukwata Kingdom, a neighbouring community, warning that unchecked interference could spark a full-blown crisis.

“Our community is under siege; from herdsmen destroying our farmlands to intimidation and arrests instigated by our neighbours, our autonomy is being threatened. This cannot continue if peace is to prevail,” he said.

In his response, the deputy governor assured the community that the Delta State government would not stand idle in the face of such unrest, emphasising the government’s zero-tolerance for actions that could disrupt peace and promising to address the community’s concerns.

He urged all communities to prioritise dialogue and unity, stressing that mutual respect is essential for peaceful coexistence.

In the same vein, the Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, said the Delta State command has intensified efforts to dismantle a notorious kidnap gang terrorising the Ogwashi-Uku axis of the state.

He assured residents that the command was closing in on the criminals and would restore peace in the area.

Speaking on Friday, CP Abaniwonda revealed that tactical teams and additional personnel have been deployed to address the spate of kidnappings in the area.

“We are on the trail of the hoodlums responsible for the recent kidnappings in Ogwashi-Uku. Two suspects have already been apprehended, and we will ensure that the entire gang is dismantled. Peace will be fully restored to the area.

“Just as we have brought other criminals to book, this gang will not escape. Our tactical teams are working tirelessly to ensure that they are apprehended,” he stated.
