A Federal High Court sitting in Warri, Delta State, has halted the Nigeria Police Force’s enforcement of its tinted glass permit policy, following a lawsuit filed by lawyer John Aikpokpo-Martins. The court ruled that the police must maintain the status quo, effectively suspending the digital enforcement of the policy through the Police Online Security Application Platform (POSSAP).

The court’s ruling follows concerns raised by civil society groups and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), which argue that the enforcement framework is unconstitutional and lacks transparency. The policy mandates that vehicle owners with tinted windows apply for a permit, but critics contend it infringes on privacy rights and could lead to harassment by security personnel.

The police, however, maintain that the policy is necessary for national security, as tinted vehicles are sometimes used by criminals to evade detection.
