A food scientist and educationist, Dr Smart Nwokorie has counseled Nigerians against compromising their health and future by consuming adulterated and fake products.

Nwokorie stated this while speaking to LEADERSHIP on healthy eating in Umuahia, Abia State capital, saying consuming such products affects both healthwise and economically.

He said in order not to fall prey to producers and marketers of the products, the people need to be enlightened on how to identify and differentiate them from the original.

His words: “Prospective buyers can identify fake or adulterated products through visuals and sensory checks, special tests, certification, and labeling among others.”

Defining adultration as a reduction of quality of products for personal gains, he expressed dissatisfaction at the level of the act in the country and called for urgent action against it.

He urged governments at all levels, the media, health sector stakeholders, and the National Orientation Agency to intensify their awareness campaign programmes against the act.

„Much needs to be done in this regard and one of them is implementing measures that create safer and more trustworthy food environment for all consumers“ he noted.

Nwokorie, therefore, advocated for stringent measures, punishments, and fines against individuals and companies caught in the act to discourage future offenders.
