Don’t Turn Activism Into National Disruption, Coalition Cautions Sowore

The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations for Good Governance in Nigeria has stressed the need for responsible activism and warned that public demonstrations should not be used in ways to disrupt national peace and security.

The coalition, through its director of Programme, Johnson Michael, said Nigeria belongs to all the citizens and urged individuals and groups to uphold the country’s stability as they expressed their views within the bounds of the law.

It said the right to protest is recognised under the law but cautioned activist Omoyele Sowore against actions that could interfere with judicial proceedings or public order.

Michael said, “We stand here today with one voice and one purpose because Nigeria belongs to all of us, and no individual should be allowed to undermine our collective peace or national interests in the name of activism.

“If Professor Pat Utomi could appear before the appropriate authorities, and other individuals have followed due process when required, then no one should be considered above the law. Sowore should also make himself available to address any matters before the appropriate authorities.

“Sowore does not have exclusive rights over public protest, and no individual owns the streets of Nigeria. Court premises should remain places for justice and should not become grounds for activities that may affect judicial processes,” the group stated.

The group also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Chief of Army Staff for efforts aimed at strengthening the military and improving the welfare of personnel.

“These are important steps towards building the security we all seek. Our military and security agencies remain key pillars of our democracy and sovereignty. Every officer serving to protect the nation deserves our respect and support,” Michael said.

The coalition also urged Nigerians to avoid politicising security challenges, insisting that the fight against insecurity requires collective support.

The coalition appealed to relevant security authorities, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Armed Forces and other security agencies, to ensure that individuals and groups operate within the framework of the law.

The group also called on activist Omoyele Sowore to respond to any legal concerns through appropriate channels.
