Nigeria’s formidable women’s national basketball team, affectionately known as D’Tigress, are set to face the host nation, France, this Sunday in a pivotal fixture of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualification tournaments.
The eagerly anticipated match will unfold at the Astroballe Arena in Villeurbanne, a vibrant city near Lyon, France. This qualifying tournament serves as a crucial part of the build-up to the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in Berlin, Germany, from the 4th to the 13th of September 2026.
Having already secured their berth at the main tournament by triumphing at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, these current qualifiers offer a valuable opportunity for the reigning African champions to rigorously test themselves against elite international opposition and enhance their global ranking ahead of the World Cup.
D’Tigress head into Sunday’s encounter following a mixed bag of results in the competition so far, recording two impressive victories alongside one defeat. They commenced their campaign with a commanding 70–37 win over Colombia, before experiencing a 77–60 loss to South Korea. However, Nigeria responded with characteristic resilience in their most recent outing, defeating the Philippines 101–84 in an impressive comeback performance after trailing at halftime.
The emphatic victory over the Philippines marked Nigeria’s second win in three games and brilliantly showcased the team’s attacking prowess and depth, notably surpassing the 100-point mark for the first time in the tournament. The team is expertly led by head coach Rena Wakama, who etched her name in history as the first woman to coach Nigeria’s senior women’s national basketball team.
