The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) has approved financing totaling $417 million for major transport, healthcare, housing and mining projects across West Africa as part of efforts to accelerate regional integration and sustainable economic growth.

The approvals were granted during the Bank’s 99th Ordinary Session held on July 6, 2026, under its Growth, Resilience and Optimisation (GRO) Strategy.

According to a statement by the Bank, the financing package covers five public- and private-sector projects designed to strengthen infrastructure, improve healthcare delivery, expand access to housing finance, support mining development, and enhance regional connectivity.

President of EBID, George Donkor, said the approvals underscore the Bank’s commitment to financing projects that deliver tangible benefits to citizens across West Africa.

“The projects approved during this 99th Board Session demonstrate EBID’s unwavering commitment to financing development solutions that directly improve the lives of West African citizens,” Donkor said.

“From clean energy and transport infrastructure to healthcare, housing and financial sector resilience, these investments will strengthen regional competitiveness and support sustainable and inclusive growth across our community.”

The largest allocation of $260 million will finance the construction of a 123-kilometre section of the Trans-Saharan Highway in Nigeria, a project expected to improve regional connectivity, facilitate trade, reduce logistics costs and deepen economic integration.

In Côte d’Ivoire, EBID approved a XOF10 billion line of credit for Banque de l’Habitat de Côte d’Ivoire (BHCI) to expand housing finance and support small and medium-sized enterprises operating across the housing and construction value chain, helping to address the country’s housing deficit while creating jobs.

The Bank also approved €80 million for the design, construction, equipping and maintenance of the 150-bed Regional Hospital of Ferkessédougou under a public-private partnership. The project is expected to improve access to quality healthcare and specialised medical services in northern Côte d’Ivoire.

Additionally, EBID approved XOF12.82 billion for the renovation, operation and maintenance of the Symphonie Building in Abidjan under a public-private partnership. The facility will serve as the headquarters of the country’s Ministry of Justice.

In Ghana, the Bank committed $47.4 million to Azumah Resources Ghana Limited to procure long-lead process plant equipment and undertake critical early-stage development activities for the Black Volta Gold Project, supporting the timely development of one of the country’s emerging gold mining operations.

EBID said the approved investments align with its GRO Strategy, which prioritises transformative infrastructure, human capital development, private sector expansion and regional integration.

According to the Bank, the financing package reinforces its commitment to promoting sustainable development, job creation and shared prosperity across the ECOWAS region.
