Edo State is set to welcome a host of dignitaries for the official launch of the Kadiri Ikhana Football Academy on March 28.
Among those expected to attend are the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo; Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Malam Shehu Dikko and Bukola Olopade, NSC’s Director General. Also in attendance will be Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), alongside notable sports figures.
Coach Kadiri Ikhana himself announced that the Academy, which has been operating on a limited basis since late last year, will fully commence following the launch.
Ikhana, renowned for leading Enyimba International to Nigeria’s first-ever CAF Champions League title in 1993, expressed enthusiasm about the involvement of the Edo State Deputy Governor, Honourable Amadin Desmond Enabulele, and members of the Edo State Sports Commission.
The event will also see participation from Honourable Gbenga Elegbeleye, chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), and all chairmen of the country’s 20 Premier League teams. Additionally, Mr. George Aluo will lead representatives from the Nigeria National League (NNL) at the launch.
Notable attendees will include Chief Peter Dunia, a respected security expert and philanthropist, along with legendary players from the victorious 1980 African Cup of Nations Green Eagles, such as Segun Odegbami and Felix Owolabi.
Ikhana, a member of the 1980 championship squad, stated that the academy aims to nurture young talents aged 9 to 16, providing a solid foundation for Nigeria’s junior national teams and clubs. He emphasised the importance of developing age-grade football in the country, stating, “I’ve gathered considerable experience over the years, and I feel it’s time to invest in our youth.”
