Edo State government has granted licences to some Chinese firms to commence the exploration of coal deposits as part of its efforts to boost electricity supply across the state.

The initiative, which is expected to drive industrial growth, will also see the firms engage in cement production and the manufacturing of ceramic tiles using locally sourced clay.

The state commissioner for Mining, Andrew Ijegbai, disclosed this during an interview, noting that Governor Monday Okpebholo has directed the ministry to intensify mineral exploration across the state.

Ijegbai expressed optimism that the mining sector could generate sufficient revenue to sustain the state in the near future, adding that ongoing feasibility studies would determine the potential megawatts of electricity to be generated from coal.

He revealed that the government has signed Memoranda of Understanding with two Chinese companies for cement production, describing the project as a “multi-purpose investment” that combines power generation, quarrying, and tile manufacturing.

According to him, the initiative is expected to create jobs, boost internally generated revenue, and stimulate economic development.

The commissioner also noted that the state government has taken firm steps to curb illegal mining activities, with at least five illegal mining groups already prosecuted.

He emphasised that miners are now required to obtain not only federal licenses but also community consent before commencing operations.

The government is also enforcing Community Development Agreements (CDA) to ensure host communities benefit from mining activities.

Ijegbai warned that any operator found violating these agreements or exploiting communities would face sanctions, stressing that the state would not tolerate practices that fuel conflict or shortchange residents.
