Nigeria’s education and business communities are set to honour renowned scholar, Otonti Nduka, as he marks his 100th birthday with a two-day centenary celebration scheduled to hold from May 8 in Lagos.

The event, expected to attract leading figures from academia, government, industry, and civil society, is aimed at celebrating Prof. Nduka’s enduring contributions to education, moral philosophy, and national development.

Prof. Nduka, a former president of the Nigeria Academy of Education and a Distinguished Professor of the Century recognised by the National Universities Commission, is widely regarded as a pioneer of values-based education in Africa.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, is billed to attend as Special Guest of Honour, while the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, will serve as Chief Host.

Speaking ahead of the event, the spokesperson of the Centenary Committee, Prof. Hilary Wordu, described the celebration as a moment of national reflection on the role of education and values in shaping Nigeria’s future.

“This centenary is not just a birthday; it is an opportunity to reflect on the principles that define our progress as a nation,” he said.

A major highlight of the event will be the keynote address to be delivered by economist and former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Kingsley Moghalu, titled “Trends and Challenges in Upholding Values Education in Nigeria.”

The celebration will also feature the launch of the Otonti Nduka Foundation for Values Education Endowment Fund, with a target of raising N5 billion to support scholarships, teacher training, and research initiatives. Chairman of Ramec Group, Engr. Grant Offor, is expected to lead the fundraising effort.

Legal luminary and former Attorney-General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi, is also among dignitaries expected to grace the occasion.

The programme will begin with a national conference focusing on themes such as ethical leadership and values in a digital age, followed by cultural activities including music, dance, poetry, and a gala night.

The event will hold at the Rivers State University Auditorium and is expected to host over 1,500 participants, including vice-chancellors, policymakers, and students.

Organisers say the celebration will not only honour Prof. Nduka’s legacy but also reinforce the importance of values-based education in addressing contemporary challenges such as corruption, inequality, and leadership deficits in Nigeria.
