The grand finale of the Upata Unity Football Cup unfolded in majestic fashion as Nigeria’s football legends, senior government officials, and revered traditional authorities converged on Edeoha Town in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, transforming the grassroots football event into a spectacle of national relevance and communal pride.

Headlining the dignitaries were Super Eagles Technical Director, Coach Augustine Eguavoen, Rivers United FC Head Coach, Finidi George, and the Rivers State Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Hon. Ukpeni Rechard Ewoh, alongside traditional rulers, youth leaders, sports administrators, and community stakeholders.

Their presence underscored the growing stature of the tournament as a credible platform for youth engagement, talent discovery, and sustainable community development.

Proceedings commenced with a ceremonial reception of the football legends at the Palace of the Upata Traditional Council, where they were received by the paramount ruler of Upata Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Nyudu Dr Felix Enene Otuwarikpo, PhD, FNIPR. From the palace, the dignitaries proceeded to the match venue amid rich cultural pageantry, culminating in a guard of honour by the Boys Brigade, Orashi Region, symbolizing discipline, unity, and respect for heritage.

The ceremonial kickoff was performed at the centre circle by Coach Augustine Eguavoen, flanked by Coach Finidi George, HRM Nyudu Dr Felix Enene Otuwarikpo, and the tournament sponsor, Professor Chinedu Ogwus, reflecting a rare alignment of football leadership, traditional authority, and visionary private-sector sponsorship in grassroots sports development.

On the pitch, Edeoha Football Club rose to the occasion, emerging champions of the Upata Unity Cup after edging Ikata Football Club 5–4 in a nerve-racking penalty shootout, following a goalless draw at the end of regulation time. The final, played at the UPE Primary School Field, was a fiercely contested encounter marked by tactical discipline, physical resilience, and unwavering determination from both sides.

Beyond the result, the tournament stood as a testament to the transformative leadership of Professor Ogwus, whose sponsorship through the Ogwus Youth Empowerment and Community Development Organization (OYECDO) has repositioned sports as a powerful instrument for youth inclusion, leadership grooming, and social stability.

” Over the years, OYECDO has impacted thousands of youths through football competitions, mentorship platforms, skills development initiatives, and community-based empowerment programmes across Rivers State and beyond.”

The Upata Unity Cup, under OYECDO’s stewardship, has evolved into more than a football competition — it is a structured pathway for discipline, teamwork, confidence building, and talent exposure. By deliberately investing in youth-focused initiatives, Prof Ogwus has continued to channel youthful energy away from social vices and towards productivity, purpose, and positive societal contribution.

Commending the initiative, Coach Finidi George described the Upata Unity Cup as a model grassroots tournament capable of nurturing future professionals. In a symbolic gesture of partnership, he presented an official Rivers United FC jersey, donated in collaboration, further reinforcing institutional support for football development in Upata Kingdom.

Coach Augustine Eguavoen also praised the organization and vision of the tournament, noting that such platforms form the foundation for identifying and grooming future national team prospects.

In recognition of their contributions to football development and community advancement, Awards of Honour were presented to Coach Finidi George, Coach Augustine Eguavoen, and Hon. Ukpeni Rechard Ewoh, Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Rivers State. Trophies and medals were also presented to the champions, runners-up, participating teams, and members of the organizing committee.

Addressing the gathering, HRM Nyudu Dr Felix Enene Otuwarikpo congratulated the teams and commended Prof Ogwus and OYECDO for sustaining an initiative that continues to inspire unity, discipline, and ambition among the youth.

As the curtain fell on the competition, the Upata Unity Football Cup once again affirmed its identity as more than a tournament — standing as a symbol of purposeful leadership, institutional partnership, and the enduring power of sport to drive youth empowerment and sustainable community development in Rivers State.
