The Police in EKiti State have warned political parties’ members, supporters, loyalists to play by rules of politics and desist from destruction and defacing of posters of perceived opposing political parties.

In a statement on Saturday, the EKiti State Police Command said such an act is morally unjustifiable.

In the statement signed by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, the police warned that anyone or group of persons found in the act or any act capable of undermining the peaceful atmosphere in the state would be severely dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the law.

Abutu said, “The Ekiti State Police Command has observed with dismay the attitude of some persons suspected to be political parties loyalists who go about destroying and defacing the posters and bill-boards of political parties in the state.

“The command wishes to state emphatically that the destruction of banners and bill-boards of political parties is against the electoral law and also a crime against the freedom of expression as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Politicians are therefore, by this release, advised to play the games according to the rules, and advise their supporters to do the same to avoid dire consequences.
