Electoral Act: Sowore Calls For Nationwide Action

Former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, has intensified his call for nationwide demonstrations over issues surrounding the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, urging young Nigerians to strengthen their demand for political reform and accountability.

He made the call during a peaceful protest at the National Assembly on Tuesday in Abuja. Sowore commended supporters for their commitment but emphasised that the movement must expand significantly to achieve meaningful results.

He maintained that genuine reform cannot be secured through a single tactic, calling instead for broader civic engagement and coordinated grassroots efforts.

Sowore encouraged citizens to challenge the political system through multiple channels, including active participation in elections and sustained public advocacy.

He stressed that organized and strategic mobilization remains critical to advancing democratic objectives.

Despite a turnout of fewer than 500 protesters, Sowore expressed confidence in the potential of mass participation, noting that larger numbers could exert substantial pressure on political leaders to address public concerns.

He also urged demonstrators to remain peaceful, disciplined, and focused, highlighting the importance of responsibility and unity within the movement.

According to Sowore, if authorities fail to respond to protesters’ demands by the time officials resume on the 24th, the action should be escalated nationwide. He questioned the relatively low level of public mobilisation around free and fair elections, insisting that wider involvement is essential.

Describing himself as a revolutionary, Sowore argued that organised confrontation may be required to secure democratic gains.

The protest comes amid ongoing debates over Nigeria’s electoral framework and governance, as activists continue to advocate for transparency, accountability, and credible elections.

End.
