The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has threatened to shut down power operations nationwide following an alleged assault and abduction of staff of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) by personnel of the police in Imo State.
In a statement issued by its Acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, the Union said workers on duty at the Egbu 132/33kV Transmission Substation were reportedly attacked, beaten, and held at gunpoint by armed police officers said to be acting on the orders of the state government.
Some workers were allegedly abducted to an unknown location.
According to the union, the invading officers forcefully entered the control rooms, vandalised equipment, disrupted operations, and compelled staff to disconnect power under duress.
The Union also listed personal belongings allegedly destroyed in the incident to include phones, laptops, and vehicles, along with CCTV cameras.
NUEE said it had already directed its members to halt power supply operations in Imo State until further notice and warned that it would extend the action nationwide unless immediate steps were taken to safeguard electricity workers across the country.
“NUEE expresses deep shock and outrage over the level of gangsterism and unprofessional conduct displayed by police officers acting on behalf of the Imo State government,” the statement read.
The Union demanded the immediate release of the abducted workers, a formal undertaking from TCN management, the Federal Ministry of Power, and the Inspector General of Police to guarantee staff safety, and the replacement of all damaged property.
It also insisted that the assaulted workers must receive full medical attention.
“Consequently, NUEE directs all members to stay away from the office until further notice, as we cannot continue to work under conditions of brutality, intimidation, and threats to life,” the statement added.
The union warned that failure to address its demands promptly would leave it with no option but to withdraw services nationwide.
