The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned that 27 states across the country could experience flash flooding between July 1 and July 10 as the rainy season intensifies.

In its flash flood risk outlook for the first dekad of July, the agency said persistent rainfall recorded in June has left the ground heavily saturated, making many areas more vulnerable to flooding from additional downpours.

NiMet explained that the peak of the rainy season typically begins in July, increasing the likelihood of flash floods, especially in low-lying communities, urban centres, coastal areas and locations with poor drainage systems.

States identified as being at risk include Taraba, Sokoto, Borno, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, Adamawa, Kwara, Kogi, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Osun, Ekiti, Delta, Edo, Abia, Imo, Anambra, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers and Bayelsa.

The agency also warned that severe rainfall could disrupt electricity and telecommunications services in affected areas. Motorists and airline operators were advised to exercise caution as heavy rain may reduce visibility.

NiMet further cautioned that flooding could damage roads, bridges, drainage infrastructure and farmlands, leading to crop losses. It also urged health authorities to prepare for a possible rise in waterborne diseases caused by stagnant floodwaters and poor sanitation.
