The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has commended  Ilorin-born scholar, Dr Daud Awwal, for his contribution to Islamic scholarship through the translation of the Holy Qur’an into two major languages.

The emir spoke when he received Awwal at his palace in Ilorin, Kwara State, who presented copies of his newly completed work: “A full translation of the Holy Qur’an from Arabic into both Yoruba and English”, alongside a transliteration version designed to help non-Arabic speakers recite the Qur’an correctly to the monarch.

Sulu-Gambari described Awwal as a worthy ambassador of the Ilorin Emirate and a distinguished member of the Nigerian Diaspora community in the United Kingdom (UK).

He praised Awwal’s consistency in promoting scholarship, moral uprightness and religious education despite his busy engagements abroad.

“This is a landmark achievement that will go a long way in preserving the Islamic cultural heritage of Ilorin Emirate and making the divine message of the Holy Qur’an accessible to a wider audience, particularly our people who are more proficient in Yoruba and English,” the Emir stated.

Earlier, Dr Daud Awwal had expressed gratitude to the Emir for his fatherly guidance and unwavering support for scholars.

He explained that the motivation behind the project was to bridge the language barrier and enable Yoruba- and English-speaking Muslims to better understand, recite, and reflect on the teachings of the Holy Qur’an.

Awwal added that the transliteration version of the Holy Qur’an was specifically designed to assist those who cannot read Arabic script but wish to recite the Qur’an with proper pronunciation.
