Labour Party (LP) candidate for Owerri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Dr Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has emphasised what she described as the fifth pillar of her eight-point agenda, focused on healthcare and social protection.
In a statement issued in Owerri, she promised to champion accessible, affordable and quality healthcare for residents, if elected.
Titled, “Healthcare and Social Protection,” the pillar she highlighted is tailored towards access to quality healthcare and should be a fundamental right rather than a privilege reserved for those who can afford it.
Anyanwu-Akeredolu, popularly known as Ada Owere, promised to strengthen healthcare facilities across Owerri Municipal, Owerri North and Owerri West.
She also pledged to improve maternal and child health services, expand cancer screening and support vulnerable members of society.
She said she would advocate better-equipped primary healthcare centres, adequate supplies of essential medicines, more trained healthcare workers and improved access to medical services.
According to her, stronger primary healthcare is essential to ensuring that families receive timely medical attention without unnecessary financial hardship.
She said she would prioritise maternal and child healthcare, with emphasis on accessible antenatal services, safe delivery, immunisation and proper nutrition.
The initiative, she stressed, would promote healthier outcomes for mothers and children and strengthen the support available to families across the constituency.
Drawing on her longstanding breast cancer advocacy, she stressed the need to make cancer awareness more practical through accessible screening and timely diagnosis.
She pledged to advocate increased access to breast, cervical and prostate cancer screening, including government support for free screening services. She also encouraged women and men to understand their cancer risks, seek appropriate screening and obtain medical attention promptly when necessary
Beyond healthcare delivery, Ada Owere said her agenda would address the needs of elderly people, persons with disabilities, vulnerable households and families facing financial hardship. She advocated practical social protection measures designed to preserve dignity, reduce hardship and improve the well-being of disadvantaged members of the community.
As a prospective federal lawmaker, she said she would push for increased investment in healthcare, effective oversight of public health expenditure and stronger support for vulnerable residents. She also pledged to work with relevant government agencies, healthcare providers and community organisations to advance practical solutions to the constituency’s healthcare challenges.
Emphasising the need for a people-centred approach to development, she maintained that families should be able to access medical care without being pushed further into poverty.
Anyanwu Akeredolu highlighted that her vision is to build a constituency where mothers and children receive proper care, cancer screening is more accessible and vulnerable residents could access easily.
