In a gesture of appreciation for Team Edo’s remarkable performance at the recently concluded second Niger Delta Games in Benin, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, executive chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, has fulfilled his promise to reward coaches who excelled during the tournament.
Following Team Edo’s overall victory, which ended a 24-year wait for a major tournament title, Enabulele and his board convened with the 16 coaches who led the team to success. They were presented with surprise rewards valued in millions of Naira as recognition for their hard work and dedication.
Enabulele commended the coaches for their resilience, discipline, and teamwork, which culminated in Edo being crowned champions of the second edition of the Niger Delta Games, dubbed ‘Edo 2026’. The meeting served as both a celebration and a strategic planning session for future improvements.
“We must continue to build on this success,” Enabulele stated. “We expect our coaches to develop new talent ahead of the National Sports Festival in Enugu.”
Team Edo topped the medal table with an impressive tally of 52 gold, 34 silver, and 25 bronze medals, amassing a total of 111 medals, outperforming traditional rivals Delta and defending champions Bayelsa. This triumph marks Edo’s first major tournament victory since the 2002 National Sports Festival, breaking a lengthy title drought.
Over 3,000 athletes from nine states competed in a range of events, with Edo excelling particularly in weightlifting, athletics, boxing, wrestling, Scrabble, and swimming.
