ENGIE Energy Access Nigeria has launched a ‘Going Green’ campaign – a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative to deepen awareness and knowledge of the benefits of green and clean environment on people and the ecosystem.

According to the company, the Going Green campaign is a CSR platform that was formally kick-started in partnership with the Goshen International School in Ikorodu, Lagos State, with a roadshow of ENGIE Energy Access Nigeria employees and students from the school, to raise awareness of the relevance of green energy, and taking the message to communities.

The campaign is also aimed at encouraging responsible behaviour towards the environment and to increase the knowledge of students and members of the public on alternative renewable energy solutions through providing correct information that enables them to adopt cost- and value-efficient energy solutions.

Other components of the Going Green initiative include the ‘Green March’ held on the 12th of November – a sanitation exercise where ENGIE Energy Access staff and Goshen International School students marched to the popular Ikorodu Garage to pick up dirt and keep the area clean and green. They were also sensitized on the need to keep their environment safe and conducive. Participants in the clean-up exercise were fully equipped with Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) including jackets, hand gloves, face masks and hand sanitizers.

As part of the campaign, students in both the junior and senior secondary classes competed for prizes in a spelling bee competition. The final spelling bee event was held in Goshen International School Premises on the 23rd of November and was attended by teachers, parents and staff of ENGIE Energy Access. Omadevuaye Miracle, an SS 2 student won the spelling bee with the word “Deciduous”. Miracle was presented with a MySol Boost Product and other gift items that will aid her learning and improve the quality of her education. ENGIE Energy Access presented a solar home system to the school to power their library.

Commenting on the Going Green campaign, Bankole Cardoso, managing director ENGIE Energy Access Nigeria, said the initiative is in line with the mission of the company, which includes delivering efficient clean and environment-friendly power solutions to reduce the carbon footprint in homes and communities. ‘‘The Going Green campaign is a well-aligned Corporate Social Responsibility initiative that sits at the heart of our commitment to solving energy shortage in Africa in innovative ways. We do this by delivering holistic solutions that address the challenge of low access to reliable electric power supply and combating the effect of climate change. So, we are excited at the launch of this CSR initiative.

“With renewable energy such as solar-powered classrooms, laboratory, hostels or study rooms in the home, students get a safe, healthy and conducive learning environment which will help them reach their academic potential. Schools are among the vulnerable facilities that lack access to efficient power and this impacts teaching and learning negatively. It’s our conviction that our Going Green CSR can stimulate ar better learning environment both in the school and at home, and more importantly promote improved quality of life in the communitie,’’he said.
