The Nigerian Society of Engineers Abuja Branch, has inducted 52 young engineers and urged them to uphold the ethics of the profession, as stipulated in the Engineering Code of Conduct.
The Induction Ceremony took place at the Nigerian Society of Engineers Headquarters Abuja, with the Topic: “Pathway to a successful engineering career (Discovering your greatness) ).” delivered by ENGR. M.B Gunat, an Assistant Director at the Federal Capital Development Authority.
In his opening remarks, the President of the NSE, Engr Tasiu Gidari-Wudil enumerated the role and importance of engineers in society. He tasked them to pusue the vision and the ideals of the Nigerian Society of Engineers as enshrined in its Memorandum and Articles of Association.
Engr Wudil, who was represented by Vive President of NSE, Engr Bemigho Ofoeyeno, FNSE, further urged the newly inducted members to actively participate in the activities of the Society and in such activities that would foster the development of the engineering profession.
“I also encourage you to abide by the Code of Ethics of the Engineering Profession at all times,” he said.
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers Abuja Branch, Engr Ben Osy Okoh, FNSE, said the induction ceremony was to welcome the new members to the Branch and the engineering family, bring to their knowledge some of the activities of the Branch and the Society in general, stimulate interest on what the future holds for them as engineers, and emphasise on the need to follow the engineering code of ethic in their practice. He extolled the qualities of the Guest Speaker and expressed confidence he would do justice to the topic.
He enumerated the agenda of his administration and some of the achievements recorded thus far. According to him, the Branch has concluded plans with the FCT Secondary Education Board to hold the First Edition of the FCT Secondary Schools Talent Hunt Competition on 24th May 2023.
He said that Scholarships would be given to the winners of the competition. “We will liaise with the National Board for Technology Incubation and the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion to ensure that all original inventions from this programme are further developed and patented. This programme is in line with our dedication to improving and inspiring young people through the power of STEM.” He said.
He further informed the audience of the proposed ONE-DAY STAKEHOLDERS WORKSHOP on the abuse and vandalism of engineering infrastructure in the FCT. “This workshop will bring together the Management of the FCDA and other departments of the FCTA, the Security agencies, Area Council Chairmen, the Panteka operators, the FCT residents, and other stakeholders for a robust and effective cross-pollination of ideas that will fashion an enduring roadmap on bringing this ugly act to a complete halt,” he said.
In his remarks, the President of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, Engr. Ali Alimasuya Rabiu, FNSE, MFR, commended the Engr. Okoh led administration for organising such a quality programme. He congratulated the New Corporate Members and urged them to be good ambassadors of the Branch and the Society at all times. He further tasked the inducted members to download copies of the recently gazetted code of engineering conduct and other engineering regulations from the COREN website.
Another speaker at the event and Past Vice President of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations, Engr. Valarie I. Agberagba, FNSE, also congratulated the inducted members and urged them to make the pursuit of excellence one of their cardinal objectives.
In his presentation, the Guest Speaker, Engr. Mattias Gunat, CEng, MNSE, admonished the inductees to read and study hard, regularly update their skills and acquire new knowledge and skills that would make them stand out at all times. He said that the bedrock of a successful engineering career is anchored on sound experience and urged them to pursue these qualities.
In his vote of thanks, the Chairman of the Planning Committee and General Secretary of the Branch, Engr Oliver Uchechukwu Eze, thanked all stakeholders who contributed to the success of the induction and wished the inducted members success in their careers.
