EU, Turkiye, Others Mourn Death Of Nigerian Leader

The International community has joined Nigerians to pour encomiums on former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in a London clinic on Sunday and was buried on Tuesday in Daura in Katsina state, Northwest Nigeria.

On Tuesday, the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Nigeria issued a statement on social media commiserating with the people and government of Nigeria over the death of Buhari, saying that during his eight-year tenure as president, Buhari was committed to multilateralism.

The statement reads,  “Throughout his service, President Buhari showed commitment to multilateralism and international rule-based order, values shared with the EU. We stand with all Nigerians in commemorating his legacy.#EUNigeria.”

On Tuesday, the Turkish embassy in Abuja also condoled with Nigeria and prayed for President Buhari’s repose.

Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, prayed for President Buhari’s soul during an event to mark Turkiye’s Democracy and National Unity Day in Abuja.

The United States Mission in a statement on X on Sunday noted that Buhari was leader whose life was defined by service, discipline, and a commitment to restore integrity to public office..

“His legacy includes his efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and all Nigerians who mourn this loss.” he said.

On Sunday, the Chinese Government, through its embassy in Abuja, released a statement on X, formerly Twitter, eulogising the late former Nigerian leader and commiserating with the government and people of Nigeria over the loss.

“The Chinese embassy in Nigeria extends our deepest condolences to the people of Nigeria on the passing of His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, former President of Nigeria”.
