“With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Raymond Sifiso Dabengwa, who succumbed to cancer this morning,” the spokesperson said. The announcement highlighted Dabengwa’s significant contributions to the telecommunications industry and his reputation as an astute businessman.

During his tenure as CEO of MTN Group from 2011 to 2015, Dabengwa was recognised for his “visionary leadership, integrity, and dedication that drove significant advancements in the industry,” according to the spokesperson.

His leadership not only steered MTN through a period of growth and expansion but also cemented its position as a leading player in the telecommunications sector.

Beyond his business acumen, Dabengwa was known for his commitment to education and his belief in the transformative power of technology. “He was an advocate for education and a fervent believer in the power of technology to transform lives,” the spokesperson added.

Dabengwa is survived by his wife, Phuthi Mahanyele-Dabengwa, the chief executive of Naspers South Africa, and their four children.

Dabengwa’s career with MTN began in 1999 when he joined as managing director of its South African operations. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the group chief operating officer in 2004. In a dual capacity, he was also appointed as the chief executive officer of MTN Nigeria, a position he held while overseeing MTN’s broader operational strategies.

His leadership journey culminated in his appointment as CEO of MTN Group in 2011, succeeding Phuthuma Nhleko. During his time as CEO, Dabengwa played a crucial role in developing and executing the group’s growth strategy, working closely with Nhleko and other senior leaders.

Before joining MTN, Dabengwa was an Executive Director at Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned electricity supplier. His involvement with Eskom continued later in his career when he was appointed as a director on January 19, 2018, a position he resigned from on July 21, 2020.

Dabengwa’s academic achievements included a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and an MBA degree, underscoring his blend of technical expertise and business insight.
