The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned Nigerians to be ready for climate variability and extreme weather events as a result of climate change.

NiMet’s director-general, Professor Charles Anosike, stated this at a one-day sensitisation forum for journalists and civil society organisations (CSOs) in Abuja on Tuesday.

Anosike emphasised the strategic role of the media in communicating scientific data to the public and noted that the agency’s success depends not only on the accuracy of its forecasts but also on effective communication.

The NiMET director-general highlighted recent measures taken to improve service delivery, including staff training and addressing staff welfare issues and encouraged participants to engage actively and share ideas, working towards a common goal of making Nigeria better informed, prepared, and resilient in the face of climate variability and extreme weather events.

The forum aimed to strengthen existing synergies between NiMet, journalists, and civil society organisations, empowering them with the knowledge and tools necessary to effectively disseminate critical weather information to the public.
