Expert Seeks Opportunities For Young Engineers

Expert in the engineering profession has called for more opportunities for young engineers to showcase their talents in organisations.

The principal consultant Wisdom School Consulting, Abuja, Segun Lawal, stated this yesterday in a lecture he delivered at the 392nd NSE Abuja branch general meeting/technical paper presentation in April, 2023 with the topic; “Managing generational dynamics in workplace” held at NSE headquarters Abuja.

He said there are different generational dynamics in a workplace, which he said are; older generation, middle generation and the younger generation.

Lawal explained that there is need as an employer or a manager of an organisation to manage these generational dynamics by giving them opportunity for professional growth. These generational dynamics are conversant with technology.

He said, “One of the best ways of ensuring young engineers have the skills your company needs are to develop them yourself.

“So, when you come to meetings do not just speak, allow them to bring their own ideas on what the organisation is, do not just be the one speaking, just give them opportunity to explore their own ideas. Like if you come to a work place do not just say this is what you want to do because the older generation do not know technology.

“For instance, if you give an older man a big phone to operate his own is to make calls because he does not really know the other value of that phone. So, allow the younger ones to set in, communicate with them, and mentor them.

“So, if you are working in an organisation as a director do not just associate with your own category of age better you associate with younger ones. Trust them with task and not just be looking at them and saying what can this one do? Just give them the opportunity to explore their talents.”

Meanwhile, the chairman of NSE, Abuja branch, Engr Ben Ossy-Okoh, while giving the branch’s scorecard mentioned that the branch has completed a borehole at Maraba Takushara which is due for commissioning, adding that the branch is also planning to reactivate Abuja Engineering Limited, a company which the branch will be using for business in order to raise funds for various activities.
