The Church of the Brethren in Nigeria, otherwise called Ekklesiyar ‘Yan’Uwa A Nigeria (EYN ) has gone far in moves to build its own university.
The projet, named Brethren University of Nigeria (BUN), will come as one of many development projects by the EYN, a church which describes itself as the worst affected by the destructive activities of Boko Haram insurgents but has at the same time been carrying 9ut many worthy projects.
President of the EYN, Rev Daniel Mbaya, giving his speech at the 2026 General Church Council meeting at the EYN headquarters in Kwarhi, Adamawa State, said the Brethren University of Nigeria is being built at its proposed permanent site in Muchala, Gombi LGA, where a land measuring 236.9 hectares has been secured at N300 million and main gate building at advanced stage of completion.
“The land has certificate of occupancy and already the ground breaking has been done and the construction of gate and perimetre fence is ongoing,” he said.
This was just as the EYN president, emphasizing that the church is the worst hit by insurgecy, disclosed that more than 70 branches of the church were displaced and many members either abducted or outrghtly killed.
He lamented that attacks on his church branches, instead of reducing, have been known to be on the rise, explaining, “At the end of 2025, we had 70 local church councils (branch churches) displaced. The number had increased from below 40 as at 2024.”
He said Nigerians do not know enough of prevailing violent activities of Boko Haram and are therefore not aware that insurgency remains a huge problem.
The EYN president added, “The continued unreported and underreported attacks on our communities, displacement of our churches and abduction of members is worrisome.”
The EYN General Church Council, otherwise called Majalisa, was a four-day event which ended at the weekend.
It was attended by pastors of the church from across the country as well as some high profile guests, including the Archbishop of Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria, LCCN, Most Rev Panti Musa.
In an address, the LCCN spiritual leader prayed for grace for the EYN to handle its losses, and for the Federal Government to finaly find a way to tackle insurgency.
