Nigerian athletics stars Miracle Ezechukwu, Samson Nathaniel and Adams Samuel Kure will headline more than 850 athletes expected at the 10th anniversary edition of the Athletic Heat Meet scheduled for Saturday, November 7, at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex, Lagos.
The competition will bring together established international athletes, emerging talents and grassroots competitors across several track and field events as Athletic Heat celebrates a decade of contributing to athletics development in Nigeria.
Ezechukwu, one of the country’s brightest sprint prospects, is expected to compete in the women’s 100m following an impressive rise on the national and international scene.
The teenage sprinter announced herself in 2025 with three gold medals at the African U-18 and U-20 Championships in Abeokuta.
She has continued her impressive progression this year, setting personal bests of 11.15 seconds in the 100m and 22.77 seconds in the 200m.
At the African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, Ezechukwu finished fourth in the women’s 100m final before helping Nigeria secure gold in the 4x100m relay in a championship-record time of 42.94 seconds.
Nathaniel, an experienced Nigerian quarter-miler, will also be among the major attractions in the men’s 400m.
The Olympian and World Athletics Championships participant was part of Nigeria’s gold-medal-winning men’s 4x400m relay team at the 2023 African Games in Accra.
He remained active on the international circuit in 2026, recording 45.89 seconds in the 400m at the Addis Ababa Athletics Meet while contributing to Nigeria’s relay campaign. His personal best in the event stands at 45.23 seconds.
In the field events, international javelin thrower Kure will lead the men’s competition after establishing himself among Nigeria’s leading performers in the discipline.
Kure won bronze at the 2025 Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with a throw of 76.01m, finishing behind Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem and Muhammad Yasir. He has also represented Nigeria at the African Senior Athletics Championships.
The presence of the three internationals is expected to add quality to the competition, which organisers say will provide a platform for established athletes and emerging talents to test their abilities.
According to a statement signed by Maxwell Kumoye, Chairman of the Media Committee of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), the organisers have completed the seeding of events and allocation of bib numbers ahead of Saturday’s competition.
The senior men’s 100m has attracted 320 entries, with the top 32 athletes according to rankings progressing to four finals, while the top 24 competitors in the senior women’s 100m will qualify for the finals.
In the age-grade categories, the U-15 boys’ and girls’ 100m events will feature heats, while the U-11 boys’ competition will have two heats and a final. The top eight athletes in the U-11 girls’ 100m will advance directly to the final.
Athletes in the 400m and 800m events have been seeded according to their season-best performances, with the fastest competitors grouped in Final A.
The hurdles finals will be limited to six athletes each because of equipment availability, while the long jump competition will be conducted in two flights based on performance levels.
The organisers have advised athletes and coaches to consult the Roster Athletics application for their event schedules, heat and flight assignments, and allocated bib numbers.
Participants have also been urged to arrive early, bring their bib numbers and confirm their event assignments upon arrival.
The competition is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. Organisers have expressed confidence that the anniversary edition will provide a competitive showcase of Nigeria’s established athletes and the next generation of athletics talent.
