Meta-owned platforms Facebook and Instagram experienced a major global outage on Friday, leaving millions of users unable to access their accounts and disrupting services across multiple regions.

The disruption affected Facebook’s website, mobile application and Messenger service, with users reporting widespread login failures and service interruptions.

Many users were automatically logged out, while attempts to sign back in returned error messages indicating that “an unexpected error occurred.”

When users attempted to access Facebook’s website, a system notice appeared stating that the company was working to resolve the technical issue.

Reports of the outage quickly spread across X (formerly Twitter), where users posted complaints and sought confirmation of the widespread disruption.

Instagram was also affected, with users reporting difficulties loading feeds and accessing both mobile and web versions of the platform.

WhatsApp, another Meta-owned service, remained largely functional despite sharing backend infrastructure with Facebook and Instagram.

Monitoring platform Downdetector recorded a sharp spike in outage reports shortly after the disruption began, although it also experienced intermittent technical issues during the incident.
