Federal Government Places Communities Downstream River Benue On Flood Alert

The federal ministry of environment has issued a flood warning alert to all communities located along the downstream of the River Niger from Lokoja through Idah up to Onitsha, saying they should take necessary caution and mitigate any possible disaster that may arise from the rising water level.

A circular issued by the ministry’s National Flood Early Warning Centre (FEW CENTER) and signed by the director of the erosion, flood, and coastal management department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, also states that the following locations and their environs are likely to witness heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding within the prediction period of 6th to 8th October 2025.

The states whose environs are placed on this additional red alert are Delta state, Lagos, Borno, Zamfara, Ogun, Kwara, Kaduna, Niger, Bayelsa, Abia and Imo state.

Bayelsa state has the highest number of towns on the warning list. Amassoma, Kalama, Kolokuma/Opokuma, Odi, Ogbia, Oloibiri, Oporuma, Otuoke, Peremabiri, Sagbama, Yenogoa, and Kaiama were cautioned.

The next state with the highest number of towns on flood alert is Delta State. Places predicted to experience flooding are Abari, Forcados, Okoloba, Patani, Ughelli, and Warri.

Lagos, Borno, Zamfara, Ogun, and Kwara states were alerted at Badagry, Biu, Majara, Ipokia, and Jebba.

Prominent towns and locations on the list include Warri, Ughelli, Badagry, Biu, Kaduna, Lapai, Yenogoa, Umuahia and Okigwe.

Bokani urged relevant stakeholders on their platforms to constantly give feedback on situational reports to the Centre and advised citizens living within and around the listed towns to adhere to strict precautionary measures.
