Federal Govt Begins Climate Change Tour, Visits BURN Factory In Kano

The federal government on Monday flagged off the nationwide Renewed Hope Climate Change Awareness Tour Implementation in Kano, as part of efforts to accelerate climate action and promote clean energy solutions across the country.

The initiative, driven by the Presidency under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, commenced with a visit to a clean cookstove manufacturing facility operated by BURN in Kano.

The event attracted senior officials from the Presidency, federal ministries, development partners, and the Kano State government, highlighting growing collaboration between public and private takeholders in tackling climate challenges.

Speaking during the tour, the senior special assistant to the President on Climate Technology and Operations, Olamide Fagbuji, said the initiative was aimed at showcasing practical, scalable solutions supporting Nigeria’s energy transition.

According to him, the Kano facility demonstrates how climate technology, local manufacturing and carbon financing can be combined to address energy poverty while driving green growth.

Also, Kano State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dahiru Hashim, who represented Governor Abba Yusuf, said the state was committed to sustainable industrialisation and environmental protection.

He added that hosting the first stop of the tour reflects Kano’s growing role in climate governance and its readiness to support initiatives that deliver economic and social benefits.

The flag-off follows Nigeria’s recent approval to export about 5.2 million carbon credits under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, a development expected to boost climate finance inflows into the country.

Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, Salisu Dahiru, said the move positions Nigeria as a key player in global carbon markets while ensuring investments translate into development outcomes.

BURN’s Chief Executive Officer, Peter Scott, said the company had distributed more than one million cookstoves nationwide since it began operations in 2023; maintaining that the factory employs over 700 workers and supports distribution across Nigeria and the ECOWAS sub-region.
