Federal Govt Begins Nationwide Diabetes Screening, Training

The federal government has commenced a nationwide diabetes screening and training programme using the locally manufactured OnPoint Blood Glucose Monitoring System produced by Colexa Biosensor Ltd.

The rollout, which began this week in the North Central zone with the training of government health officials across primary healthcare centres (PHCs), is expected to progress to a national screening campaign targeting five million Nigerians in all 774 local government areas.

National desk officer for Diabetes at the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Alayo Sopekan, said diabetes remains one of the fastest-growing health burdens in the country and stressed the importance of early diagnosis.

He noted that many Nigerians are living with diabetes without being aware, adding that the initiative aims to improve access to diagnosis, reduce cost, and build local capacity in line with government priorities.
Colexa Biosensor, manufacturers of the OnPoint monitoring system, commended the government for selecting the company as a local supplier for the initiative.
