Gabriel Opuana, throwing coach for Team Nigeria, has commended the efforts of his athletes at the ongoing Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh 2025, Saudi Arabia, despite the duo of Obiagari Pamela Ameachi and Chioma Chukwujindu Onyekwere failing to secure gold in the women’s discus event.
Amaechi earned a silver medal with her best throw of 56.99m on her fifth attempt, while her teammate and African record holder, Chioma Chukwujindu, finished in fourth place after struggling to find her top form.
Reflecting on the athletes’ performance, Opuana told LEADERSHIP that they gave their all, particularly given the timing of the competition.
“Although we didn’t win the gold, we did secure a silver, and the athletes truly put in their best effort. We were hoping for an even better outcome, but this competition falls at a time when these athletes typically should be resting. Previously, these girls were consistently throwing over 64m. Nevertheless, they put in their utmost effort, and we look forward to making some adjustments for improved performances in the future.
“I want to commend the athletes not just for what they achieved but for the dedication of all the throwers. If you consider that a championship was won with a throw of 57m, it’s clear that the timing of the event has affected everyone. This period is usually meant to be an off-season for these athletes, yet they still competed. We hope to perform even better next time,” Opuana stated.
The U.S.-based national team throwing coach praised the overall organisation of the Islamic Solidarity Games, describing the event as highly competitive.
“Regarding the Games as a whole, we have world-class athletes and top competitors here, many of whom participated in the World Championships in Tokyo this year. Their presence here further categorises this event as a very strong competition. We should not worry too much about individual performances, as this is typically an off-season for all athletes, yet they have chosen to compete. Let us commend them for putting in their best effort.”
