The Federal Government has officially commenced the construction of an Ecumenical Airport Chapel and Pilgrims Centre at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, describing the initiative as a fusion of faith, infrastructure, and national development.

This was made known in a press release signed by Chris Ugwuegbulam, the head of Information & Public Relations in the Office Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, on Saturday.

According to the statement, the SGF, while speaking during the ceremony in Abuja described the project as a “historic and spiritually significant initiative” that reflects the intersection of faith, national development, and human well-being.

He noted that the event goes beyond a ceremonial function, emphasising that it symbolises a commitment by the Federal Government of Nigeria to integrate spiritual reflection into modern infrastructure.

“The event goes beyond a ceremonial function, symbolizing a commitment to integrating spiritual reflection into the fabric of modern infrastructure,” Akume said.

According to him, the Ecumenical Airport Chapel and Pilgrims Centre will serve as a sanctuary of hope, peace, and spiritual renewal for travelers, pilgrims, and Christian faithful, providing a space to “pause, reflect, and reconnect with God amidst the demands and uncertainties of travel.”

Highlighting the relevance of the project, the SGF said the increasing pace of global mobility has made spiritual support systems more essential than ever.

“In an era characterised by increasing mobility and pressure, the need for spiritual support systems is more critical than ever,” he said, adding that the centre would be “a consecrated haven open to all, designed to uplift hearts, ease burdens, and strengthen faith.”

Akume further stated that the initiative underscores the role of faith in promoting national unity, moral values, compassion, and shared humanity, describing it as “a beacon of hope not only for the Christian community but for the entire nation.”

He also linked the project to broader efforts by the government to upgrade aviation infrastructure and enhance passenger experience, noting that “modern airports must cater not only to physical transit but also to the emotional and spiritual needs of travelers.”

The SGF commended the promoters and partners behind the initiative for their foresight and dedication, urging continued collaboration to ensure successful completion.

He expressed optimism that the centre, when completed, would serve generations to come, “offering comfort to the troubled, strength to the weary, and inspiration to all who pass through its doors.”
