The Fellowship of Churches of Christ in Nigeria (FCCN), also known as Tarayyar Ekklesiyoyin Kristi a Najeriya (TEKAN), has expressed concerns over the new tax laws, describing them as burdensome to Nigerians.
TEKAN said the tax laws were a deliberate attempt to weaken the economic power of the citizenry and called on the Executive and the National Assembly to revisit and review them to ensure equity and justice for citizens.
The appeal was contained in a communiqué issued to newsmen in Jos, at the end of the 70th General Assembly of TEKAN, held at the Nongo u Kristu u i Ser u sha Tar (NKST–URCC) Headquarters, Mkar-Gboko, Benue State,
Held under the theme “Rooted in Christ for the Renewal of the Nations” (Colossians 2:6–7), the Assembly brought together leaders and delegates from 15 member denominations and others.
The communique which was signed by TEKAN President Rev. Joel Billi and general secretary Rev. Augustine Elisha cautioned against the implementation of religious-based economic policies, such as the Halal economy, adding that such measures might not align with Nigeria’s secular and multi-religious character.
The Assembly, however, commended the federal government for partnering with foreign nations to tackle insecurity that had bedevilled country.
The church also urged the government to expedite action on the amendment of the Electoral Act to include mandatory electronic transmission of election results.
