Fenerbahce Secure Lukaku In €6m Deal

Fenerbahce have clinched the signature of Belgian international Romelu Lukaku from Napoli in a transfer worth over €6 million, with the veteran striker set to undergo medical examinations in the coming days after the two clubs finalised terms on Tuesday.

The agreement brings an end to Lukaku’s turbulent 18-month spell in southern Italy, where the former Chelsea and Manchester United forward struggled to replicate the prolific form that made him one of Europe’s most feared centre-forwards.

Napoli, who paid €30 million to acquire Lukaku from Chelsea in August 2024, have agreed to absorb a significant loss on their investment as they look to offload the 33-year-old’s substantial wage bill ahead of the new season.

According to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Fenerbahce submitted an improved bid late Monday night after initial negotiations had stalled over the fee structure. The Turkish giants, who finished second in the Super Lig last season behind arch-rivals Galatasaray, view Lukaku as the marquee signing capable of ending their decade-long championship drought.

The Belgian striker has already reached a verbal understanding on personal terms with Fenerbahce, with sources indicating a two-year contract worth approximately €4.5 million per season, inclusive of performance-related bonuses. The official paperwork is scheduled for review on Wednesday, with the transfer expected to be ratified within 48 hours provided no last-minute complications arise.

Romano, who broke the news via his social media platform, wrote: “Romelu Lukaku to Fenerbahçe, here we go! Green light from Napoli as club-to-club agreement has been reached. New bid revealed last night worth over €6m has been accepted, Lukaku has also agreed all terms. Verbal agreement so far, paperwork to be checked today.”

The move represents a dramatic shift in geography for Lukaku, who has spent the majority of his career in Western Europe’s elite leagues. The Belgian marksman has previously plied his trade for Anderlecht, Everton, Manchester United, Inter Milan (across two separate loan spells), Chelsea, and Roma, before his permanent switch to Napoli.

His nomadic career has yielded over 300 club goals, though his recent form has drawn criticism from pundits who question his fitness and adaptability to tactical systems demanding high pressing.

For Fenerbahce, the acquisition of Lukaku signals their intent to compete on multiple fronts this season, including the UEFA Europa Conference League, where they will face off against clubs from across the continent. The Turkish side has been aggressive in the summer transfer window, having already secured several high-profile reinforcements as manager İsmail Kartal seeks to build a squad capable of toppling reigning champions Galatasaray.
