Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo and United defender Patrick Dorgu have been added to the growing injury list from the international break after issues restricted their involvement in Nations League fixtures.
Fernandes was absent from Portugal’s squad for Sunday’s match against Norway after featuring in Thursday’s victory over Wales. Portugal manager Jorge Jesus said Fernandes had “played through the pain” against Wales and “wasn’t his usual self”.
“He played with an injury he brought from Manchester United,” Jesus said. “He really wanted to play against Wales.”
On Sunday, Fernandes’ United team-mate Dorgu and Liverpool striker Gakpo both picked up injuries while playing for their countries.
Gakpo was forced off after only 17 minutes of the Netherlands’ 2-1 win over Serbia, grimacing and clutching the lower part of his right leg. He has begun the season strongly for Liverpool, scoring two goals and providing four assists in six appearances in all competitions. Netherlands boss Xavi Hernández said Gakpo would undergo a scan today.
“It’s his ankle, that’s all I know,” he said. “Tomorrow we will know, but hopefully it’s not too important.”
Dorgu managed just 30 minutes before limping off in Denmark’s 2-0 victory over Wales.
This season’s first international break for men’s football in 2026-27 is a week longer than usual, with the traditional October window removed. Countries now face a three-week period of international fixtures across late September and early October, playing four matches instead of two.
