Super Eagles defender Emmanuel Fernandez has candidly admitted he was left “stunned” after being named in the Scottish Premiership Team of the Season, an accolade that caps a truly remarkable debut campaign at Rangers. The 24-year-old Nigerian international, who made the switch to the Light Blues from League One side Peterborough United last summer, was the sole Rangers representative in the esteemed lineup – a recognition that, by his own admission, took even him by surprise.

Fernandez, a commanding and influential centre-back, revealed that the honour felt somewhat premature given his delayed start to the season. After gradually cementing his place in Philippe Clement’s starting XI, the former Peterborough standout missed several early fixtures, making the league-wide vote for the Team of the Season all the more unexpected.

“It was a bit of a shock to be in the Team of the Year as I started playing a bit later in the season,” Fernandez told Rangers TV. “To be named in it, I am so grateful to my teammates and the staff, as well as the other players in the league for voting for me. I didn’t expect it, but to do it in my first season here, to get that recognition is a moment I won’t forget.”

The defender’s impact at Ibrox has been nothing short of unquestionable. In his 22 league appearances for Rangers, he has not only provided rock-solid defensive cover and leadership at the back but has also impressively chipped in with five goals – an exceptional return for a centre-back adapting to a new club and a significantly more competitive league. His aerial prowess, astute positional sense, and composure on the ball have quickly made him a firm fan favourite at Ibrox, and the Team of the Season nod unequivocally reflects the widespread respect he has earned from opponents and peers across Scotland.

While Rangers’ campaign has undoubtedly seen its share of ups and downs, Fernandez’s individual rise stands out as a significant bright spot. The player, who remains eligible for Nigeria’s senior national team, has swiftly adapted to the physical demands and tactical nuances of the Scottish game, effectively silencing any initial doubts about his significant leap from League One to Premiership football.

For now, Fernandez is rightfully soaking in the recognition, but his focus will undoubtedly soon turn to building on this breakthrough season and playing a pivotal role in helping Rangers challenge for further silverware in the years to come.
