The federal government has launched the “BisonFly Project”, a new initiative aimed at reducing the cost of air travel within the federal civil service through a centralised, technology-driven discount programme.
Inaugurating the project team at the Federal Ministry of Finance headquarters in Abuja, the minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, Wale Edun, described BisonFly as a strategic initiative designed to streamline and optimise official travel expenses across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of government.

According to Edun, the system will leverage digital booking tools and centralised platforms to deliver transparency and efficiency in the management of official travel. He noted that the initiative aligns with the federal government’s broader commitment to institutional reform and prudent financial management.

“Project BisonFly directly supports our commitment to prudent financial management. By coordinating travel and securing discounted rates, we are using the government’s collective bargaining power to cut expenditure and improve service delivery, just as global institutions like the World Bank have done successfully,” the minister stated according to a press release that was posted on the X handle of the ministry yesterday.

The project, which was developed by the Efficiency Unit of the Federal Ministry of Finance in collaboration with ICT advisers and relevant stakeholders, is expected to go live in the coming months. A dedicated implementation team has been tasked with overseeing the rollout and ensuring measurable results.

Earlier, the permanent secretary, Special Duties, Federal Ministry of Finance, Raymond Omenka Omachi, applauded the minister’s leadership and vision.

He described the BisonFly Project as a model of fiscal responsibility that could inspire reforms across the public service and beyond.

The minister charged the implementation team to ensure the full realization of the initiative, stressing its urgency and significance in the context of government-wide efforts to improve public financial management.

BisonFly is part of a broader push by the Federal Government to deepen fiscal discipline, enhance transparency, and improve efficiency in public sector operations. With its emphasis on innovation, coordination, and cost-effectiveness, the project is poised to set a new standard in the management of official travel within the Nigerian civil service.
